Unhealthy Hedges

A struggling hedge won’t fix itself

A dead or dying hedge doesn’t just look unsightly, it can quickly affect the health of surrounding plants. Once a hedge starts to decline, it becomes more vulnerable to pests, disease, and poor growth, which can spread to neighbouring hedges and create an uneven, patchy appearance across your entire boundary. That’s why it’s crucial to act fast and address the problem early. Regular maintenance not only keeps hedges looking sharp but also prevents small issues from becoming costly, widespread damage. With Hedging Kings, you get expert care and consistent upkeep that protects your hedges and keeps them healthy, strong, and beautifully maintained all year round.

Steps to Prevent a Hedge from Dying

1. Water consistently (especially when young)
Hedges need regular watering to establish strong roots. In dry periods, deep watering once or twice a week is better than frequent light watering.

2. Mulch to retain moisture
A layer of mulch around the base helps keep the soil moist, controls weeds, and protects roots from extreme temperatures.

3. Feed and fertilise appropriately

Use a balanced fertiliser in spring and mid-summer to support growth. Avoid over-fertilising, which can burn roots and weaken the hedge.

4. Ensure proper drainage

Waterlogged soil can suffocate roots and cause rot. Make sure your hedge isn’t sitting in standing water and improve drainage if needed.

5. Trim correctly and regularly
Regular trimming encourages healthy growth and prevents the hedge from becoming too dense or lopsided. Avoid cutting too deeply into old wood.

6. Inspect for pests and disease
Check leaves and stems regularly for signs of pests, fungal disease, or dieback. Early detection is key to preventing spread.

7. Protect from extreme conditions
Shield young hedges from strong winds, frost, and harsh sun where possible. Consider temporary shade or windbreaks if needed.

8. Maintain the right shape
A tapered shape (wider at the base) allows sunlight to reach lower branches, preventing dieback at the bottom.
